When Concorde entered service, she was not just a more modern jet airliner – she was a totally different kind of airliner, operating in an unfamiliar environment.
In this issue we look at the way Concorde evolved to adapt to that new environment – not just during test flights but also during the early years of service. BA Concorde Flight Engineer David Macdonald describes the instances of fine-tuning that improved Concorde’s already spectacular supersonic performance.
Even today, Concorde’s capabilities are still unequalled – as are the achievements of the men who worked on developing the aircraft, operating her in airline service, and preserving her for future generations. In this issue of Mach 2 we report on a gathering of these men at Duxford in an event hosted by the Duxford Aviation Society to commemorate the 50th anniversary of Concorde 101’s (G-AXDN’s) maiden flight. Mach 2 also brings news of the latest restoration work done by Heritage Concorde on this Concorde to return her to the way she would have appeared when she was used for the test flight programme.
