The celebrations for Concorde’s 50th anniversary continue, and in this summer issue we bring further news. We also look back at another highlight in Concorde’s history.
We begin with a feature on the first and the fastest transatlantic crossings. We include articles from Brooklands Museum to commemorate the first non-stop aeroplane flight by Alcock and Brown, 100 years ago, flying a Vickers Vimy made on that very site, and the first flight of Concorde, still the fastest transatlantic airliner, 50 years later.
In our second feature we revisit a stunning but less well known achievement by Concorde – the flight by two British and one French aircraft to follow the solar eclipse of August 1999. We hear from Captain Roger Mills, pilot of one of the British aircraft, and Colin Mitchell, who chartered the British Airways Concordes to give some passengers the flight of a lifetime, as well as looking at the French experience.
We also report on an epic tour of the USA by Foxie’s Filton Flyers, an enthusiasts’ group formed by former Concorde tour guides from Filton, to visit the three Concordes in museums there.
