This month the focus is on Concorde 101 (G-AXDN), to mark the 50th anniversary of this aircraft’s maiden flight on 17 December 1971. This Concorde was one of the two pre-production Concordes – a stage between the prototypes and the production aircraft that eventually went into airline service.
This aeroplane carried out many of the test flights to refine Concorde’s airframe and systems. She was being modified even during her flying years. In addition, 101 was unique even among the tiny Concorde fleet, as a hybrid between the prototype and the production forms.
In this issue we look at the structures and systems that made this Concorde so unusual. We also look back at 101’s history – from construction to first flights, to her arrival at her home at Duxford, where she is maintained by the Duxford Aviation Society. We end with an up-to-date report on the work that is currently going on to bring this aircraft back to the way she appeared when she was carrying out her test flight programme.
